Here are some of the main attractions of Mexico City that you can't miss.
Historic center:
Zócalo- one of the largest plazas of the world, of enormous significance as arts, political, historic and symbolic center of the city and the country. It is surrounded by the Palacio Nacional, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the City Government Buildings.
Metropolitan Cathedral- The largest cathedral of Latin America that possesses one of the most beautiful baroque facades of Mexico. You will find in its interior pictorial works of art, the Altar of the Kings, the monumental organ that dates from the 18th century and the crypt.
Palacio Nacional- (National Palace) It was the residence of the viceroyalty before the independence of Mexico, its facade combines quarry and volcanic rock. In the interior it can be admired the mural of Diego Rivera, the Parliamentary Precinct, the Precinct Homage to Benito Juárez and the Botanical Garden. In the central balcony is the Bell of Dolores, the one that the President sounds during the celebration of the "Grito of Independence”.
Templo Mayor- This area was the main religious center and ritual of the Aztec Empire. Next to the archaeological zone the Museum of the Templo Mayor is found, where pieces of the Aztec art are shown, among the ones the sculpture of the goddess Coyolxauhqui, the moon, sister of the God Huitzilopochtli, the sun.
Palacio de Bellas Artes- (Palace of Fine Arts) A distinctive building of the city. Its interior presents decorative motifs of art déco combined with pre-hispanic motives; the walls are covers with fresh of Orozco, Siqueiros, Rivera, Tamayo, OR' Gorman and González Camarena. The theater possesses a curtain-mural one of iridescent glass, designed by the Hungarian artist Geza Maroti and elaborated by the house Tiffany of New York. Constantly there are concerts, cultural events and expositions.
Alameda Central- Created by the end of 1500 by the Viceroy Luis of Velasco, takes its name of the poplars planted on its rectangular surface. The Park today is a popular place to stroll with the family.
Reforma:
Castillo y Bosque de Chapultepec- The Forest of Chapultepec (hill of the crickets) is the largest park of Mexico City. The forest has lakes, a zoo and excellent museums, besides the outdoor exposition of photographs that is found on the sidewalk Reforma and is interesting to visit. The Castle of Chapultepec, that was the residence of Virreyes and the Emperor Maximiliano, today harbors the National Museum of History.
Museo Nacional de Antropología- (National Museum of Anthropology) One of the most important museums of the country has 12 rooms dedicated to the pre-hispanic culture of Mexico. Outside of the museum you can witness a representation of the Voladores of Papantla several times a the day.
South of the city:
San Angel- To the south of the Insurgentes Avenue it is found the colonial neighborhood of San Angel. Saturdays in the Plaza of San Hyacinth you will find the Bazar del Sábado where can do a walk among the Mexican craft and enjoy the typical food in diverse restaurants that are found there. One kilometer away from the plaza you can find the Museum Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, place where the artists inhabitedaround the year 1940 and they had their studio.
Coyoacán- This neighborhood was founded by Hernán Cortez and it was for some time the home of Frida Kahlo. Today it maintains its colonial identity and it is known for being a cultural point of Mexico City. You will be able to walk through the Jardín del Centenario and the Plaza Hidalgo, to the south of which is found the parish of San Juan Baptist, that dates from the XVI century. Other places of great interest by the zone are the House of Cortez and the Museum Frida Kahlo.
Xochimilco- In the south part of the city it is found the channel of Xochimilco, where the visitors can stroll in trajineras (typical Mexican rowboats) along the channel and to enjoy the food, music and more of Mexican folklore. Very near the channel it is found the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patiño, that shows an important collection of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo´s work. The residence, which belonged to Dolores Olmedo, has beautiful gardens where the Xoloscuincles can be appreciated, a native dog of Mexico that lacks hair and very was appreciated by Diego and Frida.
Arround Mexico City:
Teotihuacan- 50 km north of Mexico City it is found the "City of the Gods", the most important archaeological zone near of Mexico and the largest pre-hispanic city of Mexico. This city developed between the centuries I and VIII and the most important buildings than can be scaled are the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.
